Millions of Texans Are Affected by Mental Health Disorders

The Challenge

The data demonstrate just how deeply mental health challenges affect all Texans.

From the 300,000 adolescents struggling with depression to the 3.5 million adults living with a behavioral health condition – and the thousands of lives lost to suicide each year – these numbers point to a serious crisis in our state. Too many Texans still go without adequate treatment, leaving important needs unmet and far too much suffering.

These realities make it clear that we must act now to expand access to care, reduce stigma and strengthen behavioral health access throughout Texas.

Texas’ Growing Behavioral Health Crisis

Texas Is Experiencing a Mental Health Crisis Driven by a Lack of Patient Access, a Workforce Shortage and Funding Inadequacies

Psychiatrist Shortages

The United States faces a shortage of 8,000 psychiatrists, who are physicians (MD or DO) specializing in behavioral health care. Texas would require 614 additional psychiatrists to be removed from the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designations.

The Cost of Mental Health Inequities

“If left unaddressed, mental health inequities could lead to about US$14 trillion in excess costs between now and 2040, according to our analysis.”
